Daniel Chapter Three, Revealed With Fire

Revealed With Fire

"The king's command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego ..."

Daniel 3:22

READING:     NASB   YL   NKJV   NIV     Commentary

Read the entire chapter 3 and answer the following questions:

  1. What are the consequences for not obeying the king?
  2. Consider who Nebuchadnezzar is and the significance of the image. Why do you suppose he chose the fiery furnace?
  3. Are there any other examples of such in the Bible?
  4. The fire is apparently quite intense, judging by v22. Yet, the three that fall into the fire, subsequently walk safely out over their captors, the bodies of the soldiers who succumbed to the flames. What in the fire convinces Nebuchadnezzar to recant his order?
  5. Compare the conclusion of Chapter Three with that of the previous chapter. What common thread is here?
  6. The exile is plainly understood in the context of God's punitive response to disobedience. In light of these first few chapters, do you think it possible that the exile can serve some purpose other than this?
  7. Having the benefit of the New Testament writings, what message does this chapter have for us today?
