"and four great beasts are coming up from the sea..."

Daniel 7:3

READING:     NASB   YL   NKJV   NIV

Draw on scripture outside of the current chapter to elaborate on the imagery in v1-14. Use a literal translation, if possible.

  1. Wind.
Dried up waters after the flood in Gen 8:1
East wind dries up in visions in Gen 41.
East wind brings locusts in Ex 10, and a west wind carries them away
East wind parts Yam Suph in Ex 14.
Wind brings in Quail in Num 11:31
Represented under direct control of God as in Psalm 78:26 speaking of the Exodus; He contains the wind in his storehouses Psalm 135:7; Prov 30:4; Jer 10:13 & 51:16
God soars on the wings of the wind in 2Sam22:11 & Psalm 18 & Psalm 104:3
Wind accompanies the rain after the 3.5yr drought 1Kings18:45 (almost certainly a west wind from over the great sea)
Elijah expects to find God in the mighty wind, but does not 1Kings19:11
Wind brings calamity on Job 1:19, collapsing his house. And later empty words are called "blustering wind" 6:26 & 8:2
A scorching wind is the lot of the wicked, together with fiery coals and burning sulphur Psalm 11.
In many of the Psalms the wicked are blown in the wind, i.e. 68:2, 83:13
North wind brings rain Prov 25:23; South wind brings heat Luke 12:55; East wind brings drought (Arabian Desert); ?West wind brings ???? (Mediterranean Sea) -- never mentioned???
Ecclesiastes represents futility using the expression "chasing after the wind"; also notably used in this matter by Hosea 8:7, 12:1, 13:15
No man has power over the wind to contain it Ec 8:8; in fact the path of the wind is unknown to man Ec 11:5.
*** precedes the returning of Christ *** Song of Solomon 4:16 "Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread abroad. Let my lover come into his garden and taste its choice fruits."
Often in the context of an instrument of judgement in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel -- themes related to those already discussed above. i.e. Jer 30:23
All directions as in Ezek 5:2
East wind a threat to mariners Ezek 27:26, also ships of Tarshish Psalm 48:7.
*** footnote indicates that same Hebrew word is sometimes translated breath, wind, spirit. Ezek 37:5 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath" [ 37:5 The Hebrew for this word can also mean [wind] or [spirit] (see verses 6-14). ] "enter you, and you will come to life." ; this theme is also connected in John 3:8 where the mystery of the wind is attributed to those born of the Spirit. Again, in Acts 2:2 the Holy Spirit arrives as a violent wind.
*** Dan 2:35 wind sweeps away the remnants of Nebuchadnezzar's statue.
Lord causes the wind upon the sea in Jonah 1:4. Then later causes the scorching east wind.
In Mark 4:39 Jesus speaks to the wind, and it becomes calm.
Signifies instability, i.e. every wind of teaching Eph 4:14, James 1:6
*** Revelation 7:1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree.
  2. Sea.
the Spirit of God hovering over the face of the waters Gen 1:2. The place where the waters are gathered is then referred to as the sea 1:10.
Later the people of God escape slavery and probable death through Yam Suph Ex 14, the same destroys the Egyption army.
The Great Sea is the western boundary of the Holy Land Numbers 34:6; the southern boundary Joshua 15:4 is also a sea, the eastern boundary is the Salt Sea 15:5; the northern boundary bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan.
The Sea was a placed by Solomon in the front of the temple 1 Kings 7 & 2 Chron 4. The sea was supported by a dozen bulls, three in each compass rose. NIV uses upper case S on sea in this context. Later the Babylonians carry it away into exile 2Kings25. This is then seen again in Revelation 4:6 "Also before the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal."
Isaiah 17 12 "Oh, the raging of many nations- they rage like the raging sea! Oh, the uproar of the peoples- they roar like the roaring of great waters!" 13 "Although the peoples roar like the roar of surging waters, when he rebukes them they flee far away, driven before the wind like chaff on the hills, like tumbleweed before a gale. "

He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River [ 9:10 That is, the Euphrates ] to the ends of the earth. [ 9:10 Or [ the end of the land ] ]

Unstable people: James 1:6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
The 'sea' is done away with in the end: Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.
  3. Beast.
In addition to the traditional use of the word, it refers to the powerful among the nations: Psalm 68:30 Rebuke the beast among the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations. Humbled, may it bring bars of silver. Scatter the nations who delight in war.

Revelation 13:5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for fortytwo months.
Revelation 13:11 Then I saw another beast, coming out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon.

Eagle as instrument of judgement: Hosea 8 1 "Put the trumpet to your lips! 6. Man's heart.

Isaiah 13 6 Wail, for the day of the Lord is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty. [1] 7 Because of this, all hands will go limp, every man's heart will melt. 8 Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame. 9 See, the day of the Lord is coming -a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger- to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it. 10 The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. 11 I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless. 12 I will make man scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the Lord Almighty, in the day of his burning anger.

State of the heart is the very essence of the scripture, as can be seen in Romans 2:29 No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.
Ezekiel 11:19 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

  7. Bear.
1 Samuel 17:34 But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.
Said of David by Absolom's men: 2 Samuel 17:8 You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Besides, your father is an experienced fighter; he will not spend the night with the troops.
Elisha pronounces the curse against the youths who mocked him on the way to Bethel: 2 Kings 2:24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord . Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.
Job 9:9 He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.

Lamentation 3 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains. 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer. 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked. 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding, 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help. 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows.
Hosea 13 4 "But I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of [2] Egypt. You shall acknowledge no God but me, no Savior except me. 5 I cared for you in the desert, in the land of burning heat. 6 When I fed them, they were satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud; then they forgot me. 7 So I will come upon them like a lion, like a leopard I will lurk by the path. 8 Like a bear robbed of her cubs, I will attack them and rip them open. Like a lion I will devour them; a wild animal will tear them apart.
Amos 5:19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him.
Revelation 13:2 The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.
  8. Rib.
Genesis 2:21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs [ 2:21 Or [ took part of the man's side ] ] and closed up the place with flesh. (Whole Chapter: Genesis 2 In context: Genesis 2:20-22) Genesis 2:22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib [ 2:22 Or [ part ] ] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
  9. Leopard.
The Bride of Christ called from the haunts of Leopards: Song of Solomon 4:8 Come with me from Lebanon, my bride, come with me from Lebanon. Descend from the crest of Amana, from the top of Senir, the summit of Hermon, from the lions' dens and the mountain haunts of the leopards.
Isaiah 11:6 The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling [ 11:6 Hebrew; Septuagint [ lion will feed ] ] together; and a little child will lead them.
Jeremiah 5:6 Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the desert will ravage them, a leopard will lie in wait near their towns to tear to pieces any who venture out, for their rebellion is great and their backslidings many.
    Habakkuk 1:8 Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves at dusk. Their cavalry gallops headlong; their horsemen come from afar. They fly like a vulture swooping to devour;
Revelation 13:2 The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.
  10. Wing.
Genesis 1:21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
Exodus 19:4 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.
Exodus 25:20 The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover. Also in Ex 37:9
1 Kings 6:27 He placed the cherubim inside the innermost room of the temple, with their wings spread out. The wing of one cherub touched one wall, while the wing of the other touched the other wall, and their wings touched each other in the middle of the room.
1 Kings 8 6 The priests then brought the ark of the Lord's covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. 7 The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and overshadowed the ark and its carrying poles.
Also 2 Chron 3 & 5 five cubit cherub wings
Burnt offering prescribed in Leviticus 1: 14 " 'If the offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, he is to offer a dove or a young pigeon. 15 The priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off the head and burn it on the altar; its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar. 16 He is to remove the crop with its contents [2] and throw it to the east side of the altar, where the ashes are. 17 He shall tear it open by the wings, not severing it completely, and then the priest shall burn it on the wood that is on the fire on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the Lord .
Dietary perscription Leviticus 11: 20 " 'All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you. 21 There are, however, some winged creatures that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. 22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. 23 But all other winged creatures that have four legs you are to detest.
Divine nuture Deuteronomy 32: 10 In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye, 11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions. 12 The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him. 13 He made him ride on the heights of the land and fed him with the fruit of the fields. He nourished him with honey from the rock, and with oil from the flinty crag, 14 with curds and milk from herd and flock and with fattened lambs and goats, with choice rams of Bashan and the finest kernels of wheat. You drank the foaming blood of the grape.
Psalm 17:8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings

Speaks of mystical mobility: Psalm 104:3 and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind.
Escape as in Psalm 139 7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, [1] you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
And in Ruth 2:12 May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord , the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge."
2 Samuel 22:11 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared [ 22:11 Many Hebrew manuscripts (see also Psalm 18:10); most Hebrew manuscripts [ appeared ] ] on the wings of the wind.
Seraphs have six: Isaiah 6:2 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.
Revelation 4:8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."
The first dozen chapters of Ezekial describe four faced, four winged cherubs Ez 1:8 & 10:5 & 10:21
Wings speak of military dominance as in Isaiah 8: 6 "Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, 7 therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters of the River [2] - the king of Assyria with all his pomp. It will overflow all its channels, run over all its banks 8 and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it, passing through it and reaching up to the neck. Its outspread wings will cover the breadth of your land, O Immanuel [3] !"
    Also, Jeremiah 49:22.
At the fifth trumpet a mighty army of winged locusts are released from the Abyss: Revelation 9:9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.
Signifies divine strength: Isaiah 40:31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Babylon and Egypt are eagles with powerful wings in Ezek 17.
The wings mystically transport iniquity to Babylonia in Zechariah 5: 5 Then the angel who was speaking to me came forward and said to me, "Look up and see what this is that is appearing." 6 I asked, "What is it?" He replied, "It is a measuring basket. [2] " And he added, "This is the iniquity [3] of the people throughout the land." 7 Then the cover of lead was raised, and there in the basket sat a woman! 8 He said, "This is wickedness," and he pushed her back into the basket and pushed the lead cover down over its mouth. 9 Then I looked up-and there before me were two women, with the wind in their wings! They had wings like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between heaven and earth. 10 "Where are they taking the basket?" I asked the angel who was speaking to me. 11 He replied, "To the country of Babylonia [4] to build a house for it. When it is ready, the basket will be set there in its place."
This concept seems related to Revelation 17.
Malachi 4:2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.
Nurture Matthew 23:37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.
    Also, Luke 13:34
Revelation 12:14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent's reach.
  11. Iron.
Purified by fire: Numbers 31 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, "This is the requirement of the law that the Lord gave Moses: 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water.
Recognized murder weapon: Numbers 35:16 " 'If a man strikes someone with an iron object so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.
Deuteronomy 4:20 But as for you, the Lord took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his inheritance, as you now are.
    Also 1 King 8:51 & Jeremiah 11:4

They will leave you no grain, new wine or oil, nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined. 52 They will lay siege to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. 15. Wheel.
The most frequent use of wheel is with reference to chariots, iron and bronze -- used by mighty and powerful kings in war. Many references to this, I will gloss over for now.
Sacred use of wheels are for the ten mobile stands in the temple as discribed in 1 Kings 7: 27 He also made ten movable stands of bronze; each was four cubits long, four wide and three high. [19] 28 This is how the stands were made: They had side panels attached to uprights. 29 On the panels between the uprights were lions, bulls and cherubim-and on the uprights as well. Above and below the lions and bulls were wreaths of hammered work. 30 Each stand had four bronze wheels with bronze axles, and each had a basin resting on four supports, cast with wreaths on each side. 31 On the inside of the stand there was an opening that had a circular frame one cubit [20] deep. This opening was round, and with its basework it measured a cubit and a half. [21] Around its opening there was engraving. The panels of the stands were square, not round. 32 The four wheels were under the panels, and the axles of the wheels were attached to the stand. The diameter of each wheel was a cubit and a half. 33 The wheels were made like chariot wheels; the axles, rims, spokes and hubs were all of cast metal. 34 Each stand had four handles, one on each corner, projecting from the stand. 35 At the top of the stand there was a circular band half a cubit [22] deep. The supports and panels were attached to the top of the stand. 36 He engraved cherubim, lions and palm trees on the surfaces of the supports and on the panels, in every available space, with wreaths all around. 37 This is the way he made the ten stands. They were all cast in the same molds and were identical in size and shape. 38 He then made ten bronze basins, each holding forty baths [23] and measuring four cubits across, one basin to go on each of the ten stands. 39 He placed five of the stands on the south side of the temple and five on the north. He placed the Sea on the south side, at the southeast corner of the temple.
The millstone is sometimes referred to as a wheel as in Proverbs 20:26 A wise king winnows out the wicked; he drives the threshing wheel over them.
Wheel is an instrument of creation as we see in Jeremiah 18:3 So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel.
Wheels play prominently in Ezekial's visions as in Ezekiel 1:16 This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like chrysolite, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel.
Ezekiel 10:6 When the LORD commanded the man in linen, "Take fire from among the wheels, from among the cherubim," the man went in and stood beside a wheel.
Ezekiel 10:12 Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands and their wings, were completely full of eyes, as were their four wheels.
  16. A season.
The appointed time for something, is the typical usage. Many references exist to the times and festivals throughout the year, but occassionally is refers to a period of time outside of the annual framework. Using YLT:
Habakkuk 2:3 For yet the vision [is] for a season, And it breatheth for the end, and doth not lie, If it tarry, wait for it, For surely it cometh, it is not late.

Hebrews 11:25 having chosen rather to be afflicted with the people of God, than to have sin's pleasure for a season,

The time of life, i.e. gestation: 2 Kings 4:16 and he saith, `At this season, according to the time of life, thou art embracing a son;' and she saith, `Nay, my lord, O man of God, do not lie unto thy maid-servant.'

Psalm 21:9 Thou makest them as a furnace of fire, At the time of Thy presence. Jehovah in His anger doth swallow them, And fire doth devour them.

Psalm 69:13 And I -- my prayer [is] to Thee, O Jehovah, A time of good pleasure, O God, In the abundance of Thy kindness, Answer me in the truth of Thy salvation.
Psalm 81:15 Those hating Jehovah feign obedience to Him, But their time is -- to the age.
A time for everything Ecc 3
An age: Isaiah 9:1 As the former time made light The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, So the latter hath honoured the way of the sea, Beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
The time of the land, the age of Nebuchadnezzar's dominion, Jeremiah 27: 6 `And now, I -- I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, My servant, and also the beast of the field I have given to him to serve him; 7 And served him have all the nations, and his son, and his son's son, till the coming in of the time of his land, also it; and done service for him have many nations and great kings.
... are there references that would tend to cause us to understand this as a single year???...
