Light of the World

Read: John 8:1-20

  1. After Jesus narrowly escapes with his life (chapter 7), where does he go to spend the night? Where does he go the following morning?

  2. What crime was the woman caught in? What do her accusers want to do with her? Why?

  3. Why do you suppose Jesus supplies the answers he does?

  4. The episode ends with verse 11 and Jesus appears not be upholding the law, thereby. Discuss.

  5. In verse 12 it is said that Jesus spoke to them again. Who is he addressing, and who is he not addressing in this section?

  6. In what way is Jesus analogous to light? Why do some in the crowd challenge him on this claim?

  7. The ensuing discussion is becoming a familiar one. What other passages does it remind you of and why?

  8. Apply this passage to situations that you have encountered in your life specifically, or to social problems that you may perceive around you. How might Jesus respond to the issues of the 21st century?
