Common Ground

In conversation with my twenty-one year old grandson recently, he was quite surprised to discover that his grandmother had never heard of the term 'algorithm'.

"You've never heard of it, Grandma?? I thought everybody knew about algorithms!"

I was sorry to disappoint him and wondered if I was the only person left who was so uninformed. My lack of knowledge made it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for him to share with me what he was doing on his work term at a local computer company.

Fortunately, we soon got onto other subjects. He shared about decisions he had to make and that he needed God's help with some of the new assignments he'd taken on.

"Will you pray for me, Grandma?", he asked. Now we were on the same wave-length! I could relate to that. The generation gap was closing and I didn't feel like a has-been anymore.

As I observe many of the young people in our church, I see their sincerity and dedication to the same Jesus that I love and trust. Their vocabulary and ways of expressing their faith differ somewhat from mine, but bless them, we are indeed on the same wave-length as we look for God's direction for our lives and each of us serves Him on our own turf.

Praying for one another and with one another is a good way to bond across generations. God understands the language of the heart.
