Serving Since 1938 - Women's Missionary ServiceWomen's Missionary Service celebrated its 60th anniversary on October 17, 1998 praising God for the many blessings during these years. In 1938, a group of young ladies expressed the wish for fellowship and prayer. The meetings began with a devotional, followed by handwork while one read a story. Soon the wish to serve the Lord in some tangible way was expressed. They began with offerings of food. These offerings were then taken to a needy family. Because of such offerings the name "Gabenverein" was given to the group. "Gaben" means gifts. I believe it was in the 1950's that the name was changed to Women's Missionary Service. Soon the meetings developed into three parts - devotional, business and social. At the beginning, the devotional was mostly Bible studies led by the ladies. Then various people were invited to share - missionaries, pastors and their wives, etc. Many anniversaries have been celebrated to which guests were invited. The programs often consisted of plays presented by the ladies. Christmas banquet to which a husband or a friend could be invited, and a picnic in the summer were always highlights. An annual visit to Tabor Manor to have a tea with the members of our church has been a blessing to them and us. The sick and shut-ins are visited each month. The Sunday morning babysitting service was begun by our group. Meals were served at many conferences and church functions. We still serve families from our group when a loved one passes away. Quilts were made for M.C.C. and layettes are still sewn every year. In 1940 the offerings were changed to money and the ladies gave as they were able. The projects have been many and varied. Our church also received a share: for song books, dishes, a stove, a piano, the parking lot, etc. The motto accepted in 1938 was Hebrews 13:16 - "And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for such sacrifices God is pleased." This has been an inspiration throughout the 60 years. There are less in our group now. Many have left for Tabor Manor and others have been called home by our Lord. Still there are 25 to 30 attending our monthly meeting. The spirit of fellowship and service are still very evident. As are the blessings of God. So it certainly is worth meeting the second Tuesday of each month. If any one would like to visit us, you are welcome. Olga Enns |
