Y2K?We read and hear much today about the Y2K problem. No one really knows exactly what to expect when the clock has ticked its way to the year 2000. The disruption of electric power is considered to be a strong possibility. Power is essential to our way of life here in North America. Without it we are left out in the cold, literally, especially in January. I'm reminded of a cold winter's night a number of years ago. My husband had just been given the word that his cancer had returned, this time in a more aggressive form, and he would need to have four weeks of radiation therapy at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. We were devastated at the news. Lying in bed that night we tossed and turned as we tried to come to grips with this new reality. As sleep was eluding us, we decided to try to read for a whil, hoping it would help to calm our fears. However, when we reached for the lamp to turn on the switch, there was no light. We soon realized the hydro had been cut off and our whole area was enveloped in darkness. Then it occurred to us, hadn't we done the same thing? We had cut ourselves off form the source of our power by letting fear and despair take over. In humble faith we took our burdne to our Heavenly Father. We knew He was fully aware of our needs as we spent time calling on Him in our troubled circumstance. And as we prayed we soon felt God's reassuring presence, and His peace began to replace our anxieties. Just as we were about to fall asleep, the room lit up brightly and we realized power had been restored. The soft rays of the street lights filtered through the curtains and we soon felf the warmth of the furnace again. Yes, power is important. We need God's power to see us through the cold and dark times of our lives. How good to know He has enough to meet our needs for today and for our tomorrows. As for Y2K, there'll be many stories to share in the year 2000. We do well to remind ourselves that God's power will not be affected. It is and always will be ON! by Elvera Goertz |
